A little hobby of mine is cake decorating! I taught myself through trial and error a few years ago, and it’s something pretty much anyone can do with the right tools and a little patience. If you’re crafty, give it a shot on your child’s next birthday or an upcoming party you are hosting! Here are a few of my cakes for inspiration…
I’ve used several different cake recipes but always stick to icing the cakes with Wilton’s Buttercream Icing recipe.
GO-TO ITEMS FOR CAKE DECORATING:
Wilton Aluminum Performance Pans 8 by 2-Inch Round Pan Most of the cakes pictured are made with this size pan. I do three layers so it’s nice to have three pans to bake them all at once.
Wilton Aluminum Performance Pans 6 x 2 Inch Round Pan I use two 6″ pans if I am doing a smash cake or smaller cake.
Wilton Disposable 12 Inch Decorating Bags, Pack Of 12
Wilton 2104-2531 Deluxe Decorating Tip Set This isn’t the exact set I have but you will want a variety of tips to create different piping designs.
Wilton 307-303 Trim ‘n Turn Plus Cake Turntable
Wilton 409-7712 Angled Icing Spatula, 9-Inch, Black This is what I ice the cake with and it really helps to make a smooth finish.
As a base I trace one of my cake pans on a cardboard box, cut it out and cover it with aluminum foil. This allows you to move your cake around from your decorating turntable to the cake stand easily. Or you could buy them HERE.
