Oh, play dough. We love you…
With a play dough fanatic in our house I have become quite the play dough connoisseur! We use play dough more days than not. Thank goodness play dough is virtually mess free and vacuums right up once it has dried. We have tried several recipes and today I am going to share how to make our favorite Scented Homemade Play Dough! It involves no cooking (score!), smells delish (double yay!) and has the added benefits of essential oils. It’s ALMOST as good as Playdoh Plus that you can purchase in the store (if you haven’t tried Playdoh Plus you should probably add it to your cart now while it’s on sale). Playdoh Plus is a must try and far superior to normal Play Doh!
So back to the BEST homemade play dough recipe… This is by far the softest, silkiest, nicest feeling {and smelling} homemade play dough I’ve made. Not only do essential oils make the play dough smell great, but they are uplifting and kill germs as well! Which is so nice because I often think of how yucky play dough can get after kids have played with it a while.
Scented Homemade Play Dough:
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon cream of tartar
- 1/4 cup table salt
- 1 packet of Kool Aid (pick a pretty color)
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 2 drops of lavender essential oil (other oils can be used as well)
- 1 tablespoon glycerine (edible glycerine is available where cake making supplies are sold)
- 3/4 cup boiling water
Mix all dry ingredients together
Add wet ingredients, saving the boiling water for last
Mix to the best of your ability with a spoon or spatula.
Leave the semi-mixed dough on the counter for about 5 minutes to cool
Take the mixture out and knead really well
Knead for about 4 minutes, or until the dough reaches the perfect consistency
PLAY!
The Silpat Mat pictured above has a dozen different uses! Nothing will stick to it and it’s a great item to have on hand for baking and play activities! It replaces parchment paper and stays put without sliding around.
I hope you enjoy!
